A fire outbreak on Monday engulfed a section of the Podium Block at the Rivers State Secretariat, sparking renewed conversations about the safety and maintenance of public buildings in the state.
The affected area reportedly includes the section housing the Rivers State Pension Board, a critical office for pension administration. Images circulating online show thick clouds of smoke billowing from the structure, drawing the attention of passersby and workers in nearby offices.
Confirming the incident, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Dr. Honour Siriwo, said that both State and Federal Fire Service personnel swiftly responded and are currently battling the flames. He added that while efforts to contain the fire are ongoing, details regarding possible casualties remain unclear.
The incident has once again highlighted the need for improved fire prevention systems, regular facility inspections, and emergency preparedness measures in government buildings to protect lives, records, and public assets.
