President Bola Tinubu has approved the temporary opening of the 37.9-kilometre Bodo–Bonny Road, allowing controlled public use ahead of its full commissioning in the first quarter of 2026.
The road was opened on Monday, with the President—represented by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi—directing that users adhere strictly to the rules put in place for the interim phase. Under the guidelines, movement will only be permitted between 7am and 7pm, beginning December 8, while night travel remains prohibited. Heavy-duty trucks are also barred from using the road until full completion.
President Tinubu said maintenance of the road would be carried out through public-private partnerships. He further appealed to traditional rulers in Bodo and Bonny, as well as the Rivers State Government, to allocate 20 plots of land for the construction of trailer parks along the route. 
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara—represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabaraba—commended the Federal Government for its commitment to delivering the long-awaited project.
Stakeholders at the event, including Senator Barry Mpigi, traditional rulers from both communities, and several members of the House of Representatives, described the temporary opening as a major economic boost for the Niger Delta, noting that the road will significantly improve connectivity and commercial activity in the region.
