The leadership tussle rocking the Labour Party (LP) at the national level has extended to Rivers State, where two competing factions are now laying claim to legitimacy.
Former spokesperson of the party in the state, Gogo Wellington, maintains that the only authentic State Working Committee is the one constituted by the Senator Nenadi Usman–led interim national leadership. Wellington told our correspondent that the national leadership does not recognise the committee headed by Hilda Dokubo. He also challenged the rival group to explain the authority under which they conducted the congresses that produced their executives.
In a swift reaction, former state chairman of the Labour Party, Favour Reuben, dismissed Wellington’s claims, insisting that he and his associates are not members of the party and therefore had no role in the INEC-supervised state congress. Reuben stated that the congress was duly approved by the Julius Abure–led national leadership, and urged the public to disregard suggestions that the party is operating two factions in Rivers State.
