Senate Summons Aviation Minister, Stakeholders Over Soaring Airfares

The Senate has summoned the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, along with major aviation stakeholders, for an urgent meeting over the sharp rise in domestic flight ticket prices that has sparked widespread complaints among Nigerians.

The resolution followed a motion by Senator Buhari Abdulfatai, who warned that the escalating cost of air travel could severely disrupt movement across the country. He noted that Nigerians have been lamenting the situation for months, with a one-way ticket from Abuja to Lagos now selling for between N400,000 and N600,000, an amount many citizens cannot afford.

While Senator Orji Uzor Kalu attempted to defend the airlines—citing increased operational expenses, including the high cost of spare parts—several lawmakers disagreed, insisting that the current fares were unreasonable and needed to be addressed urgently.

The Senate has now directed Minister Keyamo, airline operators, regulators, and other industry players to appear before its relevant committees this week to explain the reasons behind the skyrocketing fares and to propose immediate solutions ahead of the holiday travel season.
