Tinubu Swears In Amupitan As INEC Chairman

President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The swearing-in ceremony took place on Thursday morning at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, following the Senate’s confirmation of Amupitan’s appointment on October 16, after his screening at the National Assembly Complex.

The 58-year-old Professor of Law from the University of Jos arrived at the Villa for the ceremony, exchanging pleasantries with dignitaries before proceedings commenced around 1 p.m.

During his screening before the Senate, Amupitan outlined his vision for the Commission, pledging to strengthen electoral credibility, implement reforms, and expand the use of technology in the nation’s voting process.

“We must conduct elections where even the loser will congratulate the winner and say, ‘You won fairly and well.’ When that happens, voters’ confidence will naturally be restored,” he had said.

With his swearing-in completed, the new INEC Chairman is expected to immediately begin work on preparations for upcoming off-cycle governorship elections and the 2027 general elections.

President Tinubu had earlier, on October 14, forwarded Amupitan’s name to the Senate for confirmation, following the completion of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure.

Professor Amupitan now becomes the sixth substantive head of Nigeria’s electoral body since its establishment.
