The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of General Olufemi Oluyede as the Chief of Defence Staff-designate and General Waheedi Shaibu as the new Chief of Army Staff.
The confirmation followed a screening session at the Senate chamber, where both senior officers appeared before lawmakers.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the exercise, described the screening as a constitutional responsibility of the upper chamber. He emphasized that the process was aimed at ensuring that only competent and patriotic officers are entrusted with the nation’s top security positions. 
During the session, Lieutenant General Oluyede reflected on his previous tenure as Chief of Army Staff, describing it as a challenging period. He acknowledged the progress made in strengthening national security but stressed that more efforts are required to consolidate the gains achieved so far.
In his remarks, Major General Shaibu pledged to intensify efforts against terrorism and vowed to tackle the insurgent group known as Lakurawa, which has been responsible for violent attacks in parts of northern Nigeria.
The confirmation of the two officers marks another step in the federal government’s ongoing efforts to enhance national security and military efficiency.
