Flood Submerges Homes, Churches in Akinima Community

Residents of Akinima Community in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State are in distress as rising floodwaters have submerged several homes, churches, and farmlands in the area.

The worsening situation has left many families and worshippers struggling to go about their daily activities. The Vicar of St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Akinima Parish, Rev. Sampson Steward, and Pastor Christopher Anu of the Assemblies of God Church told our correspondent that floodwaters have disrupted church services and other activities this week.

Both clerics expressed concern that if the water level continues to rise, they may have no choice but to relocate their congregations to temporary shelters.

A resident who was affected by the flood also recounted how her family has been displaced, appealing to the government to take swift and practical steps rather than making mere promises.

Confirming the development, the Chairman of the Ahoada West Flood Committee, Mr. Ekwereogu Joseph, said more communities in the area have been affected. He disclosed that arrangements are ongoing to move victims to designated IDP camps.

While many residents continue to count their losses, the Rivers State Government has assured that it is taking steps to mitigate the impact of the flood and provide relief to affected communities.
