The African Democratic Congress is set to commence its presidential primary process for the 2027 general elections, with party members across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory expected to take part.
The party is leaning towards a direct primary system after all three leading aspirants declined calls to step down for a consensus candidate, setting the stage for a competitive nationwide exercise.
Among those in the race are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State governor Chibuike Amaechi, and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen. 
Party sources indicate that the decision to proceed with direct primaries reflects a commitment to internal democracy, allowing registered members to determine the party’s flagbearer rather than relying on elite negotiations.
With three high-profile contenders in the mix, the outcome of the exercise is expected to shape the ADC’s political direction and influence its chances in the 2027 presidential election.
