Rivers at 59: Residents Question Pace of Development Despite Oil Wealth

As Rivers State marks its 59th anniversary, residents have reflected on its progress, with many voicing concerns that development has not kept pace with the state’s vast oil wealth and natural resources.

Several residents pointed to gaps in infrastructure and economic growth, describing them as key areas where expectations remain largely unmet. In separate conversations, some compared Rivers State’s development trajectory with that of Lagos, noting that the state has not witnessed a similar level of urban expansion or rapid transformation over the years.

They argued that the progress achieved so far falls short of what is possible, given the state’s age, economic potential, and resource base.
