In a major political development in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara and former governorship candidate Tonye Cole have both withdrawn from the 2027 governorship race under the All Progressives Congress.
In a personally signed statement, Fubara said his decision followed extensive consultations with family, friends, and political associates. He described the move as difficult but necessary to preserve peace, unity, and stability in Rivers State amid rising political tensions.
The governor pledged full support for whoever emerges as the party’s candidate, while appreciating his supporters for their loyalty throughout the process. He also explained that his recent silence on political matters was intentional, guided by what he termed the higher interest of the state. 
Fubara further thanked the APC leadership for the platform provided and expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his encouragement and support. He urged party members to remain united and focused on the progress of the state.
In a similar move, Tonye Cole announced his withdrawal from the race, citing the need for reconciliation and party cohesion. He emphasized his belief in party supremacy and democratic institutions, stating that he would back the eventual APC flagbearer.
Cole also thanked party stakeholders—including women groups, youths, and elders—for their support, and called on his followers to remain peaceful and cooperate with party leadership.
The twin withdrawals are seen as a significant shift in the political landscape of Rivers State, potentially reshaping the dynamics ahead of the APC governorship primaries.
