The Independent National Electoral Commission has revealed plans to engage more than 1.4 million ad hoc personnel for the 2027 general elections, with a significant number expected to come from the National Youth Service Corps.
INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, disclosed this during a visit by senior electoral officials to the NYSC headquarters in Abuja. He commended corps members for their longstanding contribution to Nigeria’s electoral process, noting that they have played a critical role in election management since 1999.
According to him, more than 70 per cent of the 1.2 million ad hoc workers deployed during the 2023 elections were corps members and student volunteers, who handled key responsibilities such as voter accreditation and polling unit operations. 
Amupitan also assured that the commission is working to improve welfare, insurance, and security arrangements for election workers, acknowledging the risks often associated with the assignment.
In response, NYSC Director-General, Olakunle Nafiu, reaffirmed the scheme’s commitment to supporting INEC’s operations, while calling for enhanced welfare packages and better compensation for corps members engaged in electoral duties.
The collaboration between both institutions remains central to Nigeria’s election logistics, particularly in ensuring adequate manpower for nationwide polls.
