Senate Reopens Leadership Race After Reversing Controversial Rules Change

The Nigerian Senate has stepped back from its earlier attempt to alter its Standing Orders, a move that now throws open the contest for key leadership positions in the 11th National Assembly.

The reversal followed a motion by Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, who acknowledged that a closer review of the amendment raised legal and constitutional concerns that could complicate leadership selection processes.

By scrapping the previous adjustment, the Senate has effectively restored broader eligibility rules, allowing all elected members to participate in leadership elections. This includes the possibility of new contenders emerging for top positions such as the Senate Presidency ahead of the 2027 political cycle.

The earlier amendment had introduced a requirement that only senators who had taken the oath of office could contest leadership roles—a condition that drew criticism for potentially limiting competition and excluding some members-elect.

With the latest decision, lawmakers appear to be signaling a return to a more inclusive and flexible framework, one that could reshape internal dynamics within the chamber and influence future power alignments.

Observers say the development may heighten political maneuvering within the Senate, as ambitions for leadership positions are expected to intensify in the coming months.
