Attack on Journalist Triggers Police Crackdown on Street Crime in Port Harcourt

A violent assault on journalist Allwell Ene has prompted a broader police response targeting suspected street crime networks in Port Harcourt.

The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the arrest of thirteen suspects linked not only to the attack but also to a pattern of criminal activities around the busy Garrison Junction area. Police spokesperson Blessing Agabe stated that the individuals are under investigation for offences ranging from phone theft to harassment of residents and passersby.

Authorities suggest the incident highlights a wider security concern in the area, where criminal elements are believed to operate in clusters, preying on unsuspecting victims. The arrests, they say, form part of an intensified effort to dismantle such groups and restore public confidence.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Olugenga Adepoju, cautioned journalists and independent investigators against carrying out assignments alone in high-risk zones. He emphasized the importance of working closely with security agencies to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Police say investigations are ongoing, with a commitment to track down any remaining suspects connected to both the assault and related criminal activities in the area.
