The contest for the 2027 governorship election in Rivers State is gradually taking shape within the All Progressives Congress (APC), as more political heavyweights signal their readiness for what is expected to be a keenly fought primary.
Former Commissioner for Works, Dax Kelly-George, has now entered the conversation after reportedly securing the party’s Expression of Interest and Nomination forms. His move adds another layer to the evolving internal dynamics of the APC, where early positioning appears to be driven as much by influence as by grassroots appeal. Kelly-George is widely regarded as a close associate of Nyesom Wike, a factor that could shape alignments within the party.
His emergence places him alongside notable figures already linked to the race, including incumbent governor Siminalayi Fubara and the APC’s 2023 governorship candidate, Tonye Cole. While Fubara’s form was reportedly purchased by a support group, Cole’s earlier declaration underscores his continued interest in reclaiming political ground after the last election cycle. 
Beyond the governorship contest, the political momentum is also visible in legislative ambitions. Senator Ipalibo Banigo Harry has obtained her nomination forms, signaling her intention to return to the Senate and maintain her foothold in Rivers West.
Despite the flurry of activity, political observers caution against reading too much into early declarations. Elder statesman Anabs Saraigbe notes that the real battle lies ahead at the party’s primary stage, where internal negotiations, alliances, and delegate influence will ultimately determine the APC’s flag bearer.
He further emphasized that while the growing list of aspirants reflects a healthy democratic process, it also raises the stakes for contenders—particularly the incumbent governor—who must be prepared to actively compete rather than rely on incumbency advantage alone.
With the primaries still some distance away, the unfolding developments suggest that Rivers State could witness a defining political contest, one that will test both party cohesion and individual political machinery before reaching the electorate in 2027.
